Clip Studio Paint provides technical support to draw manga “Space Brothers” in space

日本語 / English / 繁體中文

Celsys supports Kodansha's “Mission: SPACE COMIC,” humanity's first attempt to draw a comic in space.

This mission utilizes the Kibo paid program (*1) provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” on the International Space Station (ISS), and seeks to demonstrate remote drawing in space using the robotic arm installed inside Kibo.

This project is a special initiative by Kodansha leading up to the release of the final volume of the manga Space Brothers, which has been loved by many fans for around 18 years since it was first published. It brings together the efforts of many companies, and Celsys is providing technical support with the illustration, comic, webtoon, and animation app Clip Studio Paint.

Project overview and background
In this project, brushstroke data created in Clip Studio Paint by Chuya Koyama, the author of Space Brothers, will be transmitted to a robotic arm in the International Space Station to bring to fruition the first ever comic created in space. The completed video work will be released on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

This collaboration was made possible because Chuya Koyama regularly uses Clip Studio Paint as his primary drawing tool, and because of the recognition of Celsys' proprietary graphics technology accumulated over more than 30 years.

Space Brothers is a manga by Chuya Koyama, first serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine in 2007. It follows the story of two brothers, Nanba Mutta and Nanba Hibito, as they chase their dream of becoming astronauts. In 2011, Space Brothers won the general category at both the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award. Over the years, the series has become a massive phenomenon with more than 35 million copies sold, inspiring both an anime and a live-action film adaptation. The manga serialization closed its 18-year run in June 2026, with the final volume (volume 46) scheduled for sale in July of the same year.
