1.Web Engineer
Intern T (graduate student)
Internship period: 1 year and 8 months
Position: Web Engineer
Internship experience: Clip Studio Support front end implementation, and more.
I was involved with launching a new service using languages such as Vue.js, Laravel, Typescript, Sass, and more. The whole office was generally quiet and a great environment where I could concentrate on programming. Also, helping to create actual services that have an end user is an experience not many students get. I was able to program while feeling like I needed to be on my toes.
I was able to work efficiently with the computer provided and the additional display. The whole department was proactive in the use of new languages and useful tools, which I found appealing in web-based development where technology changes quickly.
It was also nice to socialize with employees like chatting during lunch breaks and getting brought to restaurants in the area.
Intern T (university student)
Internship period: 1 year and 2 months
Position: Web Engineer
Internship experience: Email distribution infrastructure enhancement, etc.
As this was my first time getting involved with large-scale applications and company-level development environments, I was overwhelmed at first, but I slowly got accustomed to it. Some of the tasks I was given were very rewarding and I enjoyed developing them.
Before I became an intern, I thought that development skill equaled how much code you could write. However, once I started actually working, I felt that what’s important is having a solid understanding of the overall app and program structure. There was a lot for me to learn from the various efficiency programs applied to large-scale company-level applications, many of which are difficult to train in individual development.
I felt that this internship provided a good working environment from the office itself to the time and attendance system. All the employees were also very personable and I could ask any of them for help. They would gladly give advice when I ran out of ideas and got stuck. It made my work go smoothly while also making it fun.
Intern S (graduate student)
Internship period: 2 years and 7 months
Position: Web Engineer
Internship experience: Clip Studio improvement
I started out as an intern learning the programming skills necessary for development, and now I am helping develop and improve the tool's UI. Through my work as an intern I learned the necessary skills to become an engineer.
I am currently working remotely, but I am able to concentrate on development at home as well as in the office. I have been provided with an environment that allows me to develop at home, so I can work remotely and still concentrate on development. When I am unsure about a task I can just use the chat tool to ask which makes it easy to learn. In addition, flexible working days allow me to balance work with my graduate school research activities.
It’s rewarding to learn skills that come in handy as an engineer even after I enter the workforce. I also feel good contributing to the development of tools that many people use. I also feel like I’ve gained valuable experience that I wouldn’t get as a student by becoming familiar with tool development workplace interactions and atmosphere.
2.Infrastructure Engineer
Intern K (university student)
Internship period: 6 months
Position: Infrastructure Engineer
Internship experience: On-premise database migration to AWS
I was anxious about an internship position that was fully remote, but I was able to get work done without issue. The work setup allowed me to have meetings with the team if I had questions.
My work as an intern involved some work that employees actually perform. I was surprised at first, but experiencing actual tasks gave me a concrete image of what it is like to work as an infrastructure engineer.
I felt responsible for handling a system that was running the company, but I felt secure by using a procedure manual that was checked by other employees while doing my work. I never found myself stuck as I could easily ask others for help or when I had questions.
Also, it was great to get a sense of Celsys’ company culture and atmosphere from seeing the employees’ interactions through the company’s chat tool. I felt that the company as a whole is very open because I got to observe the communication and business interactions among employees.
3.App Development Engineer
Intern S (graduate student)
Internship period: 1 year and 6 months
Position: App Development Engineer
Internship experience: Research and development in the illustration and manga industries
Research and development of features for Clip Studio Paint
During my internship, I was challenged to do a variety of things regardless of my experience, including web development, app development using in-house libraries, and applying image processing/deep learning to products. I grew a lot not just in my technical skills, but also learned how to write code that is readable and extendable for others to easily use it.
The environment within the company was very open and I could easily discuss development, my progress, and even make small talk with others. Everyone here is interested in illustration and comics and supporting them through their work. It made me interested in chatting with many of them. It was very interesting to just observe all the various work activities and chats on the company’s network.
Although my internship was online, everyone was concerned about our progress so I was able to continue without worry. I was honestly happy when I was complimented on my progress report and that boosted my motivation. I was also delighted that something I implemented in C++, albeit small, was incorporated into the product and became a part of the service. If I was not a Celsys intern, I don’t think I would have been involved in work that would have been tangibly seen outside of the company. It was such a valuable experience.
Celsys was not just about the services, the working environment was also very engaging, so I am happy that I had the courage to apply to be an intern. I am truly grateful to everyone who kindly guided me on a daily basis and made it possible for me to enjoy working with them for a year and a half. I admire everyone who worked with me. Thank you.
Intern M (university student)
Internship period: 1 year
Position: App Development Engineer
Internship experience: Research and development in the manga industry
The fact that I completed all the intern induction processes on the first day of work, and then worked remotely from the very next day left a strong impression on me. The smooth progression to remote work was remarkable as many companies struggle with transitioning to it. I honestly thought it was amazing.
Also, as my internet access at home is unstable, they really helped me out by promptly lending me pocket wifi. I was able to concentrate on my work thanks to that. Above all, the fact that I was able to work in a secure position despite media reports about the financial plight of college students in the Covid-19 pandemic greatly reduced my mental stress during college.
My tasks were somewhat different from my major, but it was a great opportunity to deepen my knowledge in a different field. I believe this experience will serve me well in the future.
In addition, I never had the opportunity to spend time replicating other people's research in my usual research, so this was a very valuable experience that allowed me to think deeply about detailed study methods and other topics. Along with my experience in the lab, I want to continue to make use of my internship experience in the future.
Intern N (vocational school student)
Internship period: 2 weeks
Position: App Development Engineer
Internship experience: Research and development in the 3D industry
’m very happy with the whole experience. It was tough analyzing the source code for a large project and gaining new knowledge, but it was also enjoyable at the same time. I felt that it was a very meaningful and valuable experience. While it was only for two weeks, I really deepened my understanding of OpenGL and cross platform development thanks to the internship.
I was assigned to the department involved in 3D development, which allowed me to make use of some of the knowledge I already had. Although it was for a short period of time, it was great to experience tasks that were close to actual work, like participating in daily scrums, work flows, and seeing progress reports.
Now that I have a clear vision of how I will work when I enter the workforce, I am determined to acquire even more knowledge and skills as a student.
There are features of Clip Studio Paint that I first learned through this internship and I’m inspired to use them more effectively in my own creative process. It was also a very refreshing and enjoyable experience for me to know and get involved with the inner workings of Clip Studio Paint, as I am already a user.
Intern A (university student)
Internship period: 4 months
Position: App Development Engineer
Internship experience: Research and development in the illustration industry
Development of Clip Studio Paint’s filter plugins
Overall, it was a very enjoyable internship experience. It was a good opportunity for me to deepen my understanding of the field and to discover some of the challenges and opportunities for personal growth.
I really appreciated that I could get involved with something close to my field of research or in something that I was interested in. Even though my work was no longer venturing into hobby territory, My work went beyond being a job and into my personal hobbies, and I really appreciated the fact that they evaluated it properly and taught me when I was unsure about implementation. Thanks to their cooperation, I was satisfied that I produced good work.
It is also profoundly moving to know that the code that I wrote is in Clip Studio Paint, which I always use. It was a great experience that made me go “I am actually working at Celsys”.
Intern H (graduate student)
Internship period: 3 years
Position: App Development Engineer
Internship experience: Development to improve the usability of the ebook authoring tool
Development of Clip Studio Paint’s filter plugins
It was great to be able to conduct research quite freely. I learned a great deal through my internship, including gaining the knowledge required for research and development and writing experimental code.
The work environment was also very nice as the working days were very flexible, so I could prioritize my research at graduate school.
It was a very meaningful experience, as I felt that what I learned in graduate school and what I learned as an intern were mutually beneficial.
4.Machine Learning Engineer
Intern C (university student)
Internship period: 6 months
Position: Machine Learning Engineer
Internship experience: Research and development in the manga industry
I was interested in automating comic translations, so I applied for an internship. I was a complete beginner when it came to machine learning at first, but through studying PyTorch tutorials and CNN, I learned the basics of deep learning. Although I am not Japanese, everyone was friendly towards me and I was able to interact with other interns and employees at the progress meeting once a week. I was able to ask questions without hesitation and learn a lot. My internship was also very fulfilling, as I got to explore other image processing-related research at company study sessions.
They also quickly responded to my request for a letter of recommendation for a graduate school abroad. Thanks to them, I successfully got into a top graduate school overseas. Thank you. I want to actively make use of what I learned at Celsys internationally.
I was very excited to do a long-term internship for the first time in my life! If I had the chance, I would like to do an even longer internship and work with everyone at the office. It was only for a short time, but I really appreciate all the help I received from so many people. The half year I spent at Celsys was a very important experience for me.
5.Editing and Content Creation
Intern F (university student)
Internship period: 1 month
Position: Editing and Content Creation
Internship experience: Creation of on-demand media articles and planning official YouTube videos
I was involved in some of the planning and production of content for the “How to Draw Illustrations and Manga” tutorial site and the official YouTube channel. It was around the time when Clip Studio Paint’s Simple Mode for smartphones was released, so I got the opportunity to create illustrations by actually using the features myself with my fingers.
My proposals for the tutorial site and the illustration I created in Simple Mode as an intern were actually published in an article. While my internship was for a short time period, I learned a great deal just from being deeply involved in the actual work process, more than I could have imagined. It was surprising and at the same time very rewarding to see something I was involved in take shape and reach creators around the world.
What also left an impression on me was the vibe of the people around me. The team had clear opinions when it came to content, but their demeanor was flexible, making it a good environment to exchange ideas and ask questions. I felt very comfortable working there.
In addition, I was able to learn more about what perspectives and ideas are required at the workplace by creating proposals and receiving feedback while utilizing my knowledge of marketing and planning that I had studied at university.
6.Customer Support
Intern R (university student)
Internship period: 5 months
Position: Customer Support
Internship experience: Responding to international user inquiries about Clip Studio Paint
I was in charge of responding to inquiries from users of Clip Studio Paint outside of Japan about how to use the app, and questions about subscriptions and licenses.
As I am originally a Clip Studio Paint user, I had some knowledge when it came to the app, but almost none when it came to subscriptions and licenses. It was tough at first. However, with a wealth of knowledge and online support from the team, I was able to work with ease through trial and error. I also improved my language skills and flexibility as I had to change the language as well as the content of emails and information for each country.
The company atmosphere was appealing as they were always on the lookout for new information. I was surprised that they were sharing information not just about tools and software, but on a wide range of topics such as user posts from social media and even about events like Comiket. Internal communications were mainly done through the chat tool and not really through stiff emails, so a student without work experience could easily participate in business correspondence.
As Clip Studio Paint has new versions, the content of customer inquiries also changes, so this internship allowed me to always be in touch with the latest information while I work.
